POSTDOCTORAL AND PHD POSITION AVAILABLE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern
Europe (IAMO), Halle (Saale), Germany, Department of Structural Development
of Farms and Rural Areas, has both a postdoctoral and a PhD position
available in the project "Models of farm-level structural change", funded by
the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project is part of the
newly-established DFG research unit "Structural Change in Agriculture" at
the Humboldt-University of Berlin, Department of Agricultural Economics and
Social Sciences.
The project seeks to better understand and predict structural change in
agriculture. Particular focus will be placed on improving farm-based
decision models with respect to temporal interdependencies (e.g.
investment decisions), risk (financing) and strategic interactions (such as
those on land markets) and the operationalization of these models within an
agent-based simulation framework. In a second step, agent-based models will
be used for experiments with real persons.
Candidates for the postdoctoral position should hold a PhD in agricultural
or general economics. The position requires an excellent track record in
agent-based computational economics. Knowledge of farm-based modelling, real
options theory and a good command of econometric methods are considered
advantages. The successful candidate will primarily collaborate with Prof.
Dr. Alfons Balmann (IAMO) and PD Dr. Oliver Mußhoff
(Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg). There will also be close
collaboration with the Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Innovation
Management, Humboldt-University of Berlin, regarding the design and
implementation of economic experiments. The candidate will be responsible
for organizing the research and will be able to influence research
priorities.
PhD candidates should hold a Masters degree in agricultural or general
economics. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to prepare
a PhD in the outlined research framework. The focus of the work will be
implementing single aspects of farm decision-making in an existing
agent-based framework and conducting a policy and scenario analysis with the
improved framework. This will be done in collaboration with the postdoctoral
fellow. Furthermore, the successful candidate will benefit from the
scientific exchange within the research unit and is encouraged to
participate in the Doctoral Certificate Program in Agricultural Economics
(http://www.agraroekonomik.de) as well as to take part in the scientific
activities of the newly-established IAMO Graduate School.
The work contract is limited to a period of three or six (depending on the
prolongation of the grant) years. Salary is based on the TV-L (Ost) with
social benefits valid for public servants, and between 0.5 TV-L E13 and 1.0
TV-L E13/E14.
We regret that we cannot refund any application expenses.

Please submit your application, including a letter of motivation, CV and
academic certificates, by 15 September 2007 to:

Faculty of Economics and Business
The Faculty of Economics and Business has over 3,000 students in Economics,
Econometrics, Fiscal Economics, Operations Research & Management, and
Actuarial Sciences, and in Graduate and Master?s programmes. Research is
conducted in a wide range of areas. A large part of the research takes place
within the Tinbergen Institute Amsterdam. The Faculty employs approximately
500 people.
The Department of Quantitative Economics is looking for a
Postdoctoral research fellow for the project ?Information Flows in Financial
Markets?
Full time
vacancy number 06-5038
For both internal and external candidates
Asset prices are driven by the expectations of market participants regarding
future price developments. These expectations in turn are driven by the
inflow of new information. The costs involved in information acquisition and
the time required to process this information and convert it into market
orders gives the response to news an interesting dynamics, which can be well
described in terms of information flows. In this project, recently developed
information theoretic methods from physics and statistics will be used to
investigate these information flows, and new methods tailored to financial
time series will be developed.
The project is embedded in the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics
and Finance (CeNDEF) research group of the Faculty of Economics and
Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam. This young, multidisciplinary
research group provides an excellent and stimulating research environment.
The fellow will be appointed as part of the NWO research project Information
Flows in Financial Markets within the CeNDEF research group.
Tasks
To develop nonparametric information theoretic methods for quantifying
nonlinear dependence in multivariate financial time series.
Requirements
Applicants must have completed a PhD degree in Econometrics, Statistics or a
related field. They should have a strong background in
mathematics/statistics.
